We ran this "gift guide" last year, and with most of us now doing our shopping online (and invariably leaving it late, or maybe that's just me!?) we've got 5 quick ideas for your food-obsessed friend. Mind you, these aren't just Christmas gifts, think of them as 'proof of patience' when it comes to their hobby, because let's face it, you probably put up with alot...
We are a very simple bunch, us cooking-folk, and without sounding like we are specific about anything (we are always grateful for anything that we didn't have to pick up ourselves, although that's how anyone is supposed to be when given a gift!) here are a couple of criterion to consider when you're either unsure or divided on a gift idea:
1)Durability - if the item you are getting is to be an aid on a day to day basis then make sure it is tough and there is some sense of durability to it. A kitchen can be a dangerous place to be in especially with the speeds we move at(!). Items live in pockets or behind aprons or shelves with unrestricted access. On top of this, there is also the commute to and from work. In the past we have told you about how cooking is a labour of love - we don't often have our own cars and taxis are reserved for fernet-fueled journeys back home late at night (even more reason for durability needed here). Most of us walk, run, cycle, navigate our way to work on public transport and these can be treacherous journeys for a poorly-built gift.
2)Diversity - one item, multiple uses is what we're talking here. Ok so not everything can be the swiss army-knife of the food world, but where possible try to avoid the single-use devices that serve no better purpose than to clog up cupboard space and wreak havoc on your battery collections.
3)Entertainment Value – When in doubt go for humour because what can be more fun than seeing a humorous custom-printed t-shirt (or chef jacket) on the food-lover at any point of the day? There are a number of customisations you can make to things like socks, underwear, trousers, aprons and even bandanas to make that cook in your life feel extra-special!!
Without any further ado, here are our selections for 2015. Do comment below and share above if you feel we’ve really got this right, or let us know what we’ve missed out! R.
