With our "Best of the Butcher's Block" popup coming up & a few seats still left we thought we'd share the introductory experience we received from the Woodford Reserve team...
When the team behind Woodford Reserve got in touch with us back in November we though we had to get involved & start swotting up on their offering. This all came about while trying to gauge what popups & supperclubs had to offer guests. The result....a chance for some lucky guests to receive a free Old Fashioned from Woodford Reserve (don't forget to pick up tickets to this weekend's event by clicking here).
Even more lucky for us was when we were offered the chance to receive an introduction to the Woodford Reserve brand and learn to make the perfect Old Fashioned ourselves, with the hopes of being able to repeat the feat during our popup on Friday & Saturday night. Mr. Woodford himself, Tom Vernon, was on hand, along with Hannah, from Stir PR, to make sure we were doing everything right.
It wasn't just about the tasting as Tom shared with us some of the secrets of Woodford Reserve, with the most important facet of what they do is to make the most tasty product year after year. The grains involved in the making of a batch are what you'd expect, with a high (a whopping 18%) rye content giving Woodford its characteristic flavour. Ferment this with mineral water (key to why Kentucky is THE place to make the best Bourbon) collected from a well just next door to the distillery, then triple copper pot distill it and you're only part of the way done. Ageing in charred American White Oak Barrels that are produced by Woodford Reserve's parent company only goes to show how important flavour is, as most distilleries will out-source this process. All of this is love and hard work happens in the oldest operational distillery in the States, not bad huh?! At the end of a minimum 7 year period, Master Distiller Chris Morris has to give his stamp of approval on a batch of this sweet, yet well-rounded bourbon on each bottle (incidentally, the design of the bottle itself has it's own interesting brick-related story!).
All in all, A & I had a great time learning the ropes and expanding our knowledge about everything Woodford and are grateful to be working with the brand. Now that we know a thing or 2 about this golden elixir, I'm looking forward to seeing our guests enjoy our best attempt at an Old Fashioned tomorrow night! R.
