Me and R were both schooled in cookery across the Atlantic from each other. As well as having different styles, methods and thoughts on different areas of cookery, one of the funniest differences we have come across is the fact some ingredients have different names in the same language...
Being brought up in the UK, I naturally like to tease R that his American culture is far less established than ours and therefore far less superior. I still find it hilarious when he's asked to do a job in the Kitchen and his face draws a blank. It doesn't help in a high pressure environment to have to learn a new set of ingredient names and remember to use them, especially during service where communication is key. Any chefs that have spent time working overseas will have encountered how hard service is in another language!
I hope this article can serve as a resource for you young British chefs thinking of working in America or vice-versa. There are many different food translations between us and our American cousins here are a few below:

I know what you're all thinking, the American terms just look either borrowed from other cultures or are just plain lazy (although maybe we have borrowed aubergine and courgette from France?) ! Ha I personally am inclined to agree, however R would make the case as in Coriander that by having two different words for the leaves and seeds (cilantro and coriander respectively) makes much more sense.
Aside from other obvious ones like tart/pie and chips/crisps, we have started to find across all cultures in the world there tends to be certain dishes and ingredients that end up having more than one name. A few of these include: chickpea fritters in Italy, depending on where you live either the north or south of the country you may call then panisse or panelle; also depending on which part of Germany/Austria you are from you may know leberkäse as fleischkäse and finally, if you are in the Basque country, you may encounter pintxos which are similar to the Spanish tapas.
