We've all got them and with the countdown to a busy Summer coming to a close, we're sure there will be some nights (and days!) where we can think of nothing but these delicacies, not matter how bad they may sound coming from a chef...
Picture waking up on your day off after a particularly difficult week of fighting through the weeds in the kitchen and you are nursing a hangover while debating with yourself about where, how and what the next set of calories to enter your system will be. This is undoubtedly the place that I have found myself on several mid-week days off and I always seem to find myself choosing from the same tried and tested list that might only seem to make the list of drunken foods for most normal people.
On numerous occasions the question has been posed to me about what kind of food I like to eat and it the answer always seems to blow most people away. As a chef you see and taste delicious food mostly all day long. Your access to unbelievable produce is unrivalled and, depending on where you work, the amount of great equipment is unparalleled- you feel like Zeus when having to choose a team of gods to play a round of 5-a-side with! I love the food I cook and I will ALWAYS cook it to the best of my abilities but when I get home to a poorly-stocked fridge (after various room-mates have raided my food stash from the last day off) and a kitchen that feels like it has been designed by a 5 year old, my mind goes straight for the high calorie options. Maybe it's a survival instinct that has been passed down through our genes, but I will promise you that the majority of chefs out there have their vices and you'll be surprised where they might come from. David Chang is famed for his love of ramen and Sean Brock's appreciation of the Hot Brown's healing power's have been well covered in the US TV series: The Mind of a Chef, so here are some of the things that keep me happy when I need my guilty pleasure:
I'm sure there are more, but those will have to wait as now my stomach is aching to be sated by one, or more, of this selection! We'd love to know what your guilty pleasure foods are so please comment below and let us know what your guilty pleasure foods are. R.
